2 Académie Française
The French Academy is an academy of letters, whose main function is to monitor and prescribe the development of the French language. It was founded in 1635 during the reign of King Louis XIII. It is a self-perpetuating Academy, with forty members, known as " les Imortelles". Academicians are elected for life by the other Academicians. The Acadamy publishes an official dictionary of the French language, but its opinions are not always respected even by the writers of official documents. In recent years, the Academy has been slow to adapt to the changes in the French language resulting from the influence of English and American, and of youth culture in general. It has fought a rearguard but generally unsuccessful action to preserve the French language from contamination by English; some successes have however been marked up, such as the replacement of " une pipeline" by " un oléoduc" (once the main word to describe a pipeline, "pipeline" has virtually disappeared from modern French), or - to a lesser extent - " hit parade", which now coexists with " palmarès".Dictionnaire Français-Anglais. Créé en janvier 2001, le laboratoire ATILF (Analyse et traitement informatique de la langue française) succède à l’INaLF (Institut national de la langue française, France) pour développer des programmes de recherche sur la langue française, principalement son vocabulaire, par le biais de bases interactives spécifiques. Les données lexicales et textuelles produites portent sur divers registres du français: langue littéraire (du 14e au 20e siècle), langue courante écrite et parlée, langue scientifique et technique (terminologies) et régionalismes. L’ATILF gère plusieurs bases textuelles payantes, par exemple Frantext, un corpus de textes littéraires français (16e-19e siècles) lancé en 1995, ou encore l’Encyclopédie de Diderot, réalisée en collaboration avec le projet ARTFL (American and French Research on the Treasury of the French Language) de l’Université de Chicago (Etats-Unis). En accès libre, Dictionnaires est une collection de dictionnaires informatisés comprenant les dictionnaires de Robert Estienne (1552), Jean Nicot (1606) et Pierre Bayle (1740), plusieurs éditions des dictionnaires de l’Académie française (1694, 1798, 1835, 1932-1935, 1992) et enfin le Trésor de la langue française informatisé (TLFi, 1971-1994).
